There are a whole raft of fiestas and festivals taking place on the holiday island of Lanzarote throughout the year and as result many tourists book accommodation such as villas in Puerto del Carmen to coincide with one or other of these fiestas, for example, New Year, Nuestra Señora del Carmen and San Gines which is only a fraction of the festivities that happen each year.
The Christmas period is always a busy time on Lanzarote. Demand for accommodation such as holiday villas in Playa Blanca is high. And the locals celebrate Christmas not once but twice. As in Spain children don’t get their hands on their presents until Epiphany on the 5th of January, or Dia del Reyes as it is known locally. When processions take place in the main towns cross the island featuring three kings on camel back, who dispense sweets and presents to the crowds. The best procession takes place in the islands capital of Arrecife and in the main resort of Puerto del Carmen.
Rio may be the best know carnival location in the world. But this event is also seriously hot stuff in the Canaries. With the locals on Lanzarote enjoying two to three weeks of serious partying as the event rolls out across the island. Carnival is traditionally the Catholic worlds last big knees up before lent and on Lanzarote the locals really let their hair down. With major processions with floats and music passing through all of the main resorts and towns throughout February.
May 30th is the day that the Canary Islands first gained their autonomy from mainland Spain. And as result this is now marked with celebrations across Lanzarote and the other six islands. With everyone from local school kids through to the supermarkets getting in on the party. As a wide range of events take place.
Corpus Christi is one of the most colourful annual events to take place on Lanzarote. Every year in mid June groups across the island plan and create their own carpets crated from multi coloured salt, which was once a major export product. With designs depicting scenes from the bible. Los Dolores is a fantastic annual festival that takes place every September. And essentially comprises a pilgrimage conducted by thousands of locals to the village of Mancha Blanca. Where the lava flows that spilled out of erupting volcanoes finally came to a halt in 1824. In Mancha Blanca the event ends in a serious party as an icon of Los Dolores is paraded through the throng.

The second largest of the canary islands, Fuerteventura sits just off the coast of Africa. There are 7 islands in all and Fuerteventura is home to some of the longest beaches of all the islands.
A popular winter holiday destination, the island boasts all year round sunshine with winter temperatures between twenty and 22 degrees and the summer averaging thirty degrees.
With two main resorts, Caleta de Fuste and Corralejo, Fuerteventura is less commercialised than Tenerife and Gran Canaria but still has lots to offer for canary islands vacation.}
Situated in the north of the island is Corralejo and was the first resort established on the island for holiday makers. Comprising of apartment blocks and newer luxury villas and apartments the resort has lots to offer both the young and old. An abundance of restaurants align the coast walk and the adjacent main street and a variety of water sports can be found on the beach. There is also a new ‘Baku Water Park’ and adjacent theme park which are both popular.
A little quieter than Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste is situated on the east coast of the island, only a 15 minute drive from the airport. The resort is based around a horse shoe shaped beach which has been built with children’s safety in mind. There is an variety of bars, restaurants and nightclubs and lots of children’s parks to keep the kids amused. The harbour offers a wide range of water sports including water skiing and diving.
The town of Jandia is in the south of the island. Stronger winds prevail in the South, and the annual windsurfing championship is held here bringing 100’s of visitors to the region. The beaches near this area are some of the longest in the Canaries.
A drive inland can find some beautiful villages, still relatively untouched and still having typical Canarian traditions. The food served in these areas is some of the best on the island and also some of the cheapest!
With its clear blue waters and consistent water temperatures, Fuerteventura is an ideal holiday destination for both the young and old and if you are a beach lover, there are more than 150 to choose from!

Lanzarote in the Canary Islands has long been associated with package holidays and mass market tourism. But the island essentially splits into two halves. With the south home to the main resorts whilst the north remains largely unspoiled. Thanks to strict local planning laws which have carefully restricted development here. Lanzarote´s two separate faces become obvious when you begin to tour the island. All of the accommodation such as Lanzarote holiday villas, hotels, apartments are concentrated in the three main holiday resorts. Whilst the northern half is largely the preserve of local residents. And where agriculture still plays a very prominent role. Visitor here are spoilt for choice given the range of Lanzarote holiday villas so you should be able to find something to suit your needs.
This other side of the island can be easily discovered by driving away from Puerto del Carmen along the LZ1 in the direction of the airport and the capital city of Arrecife. Take the ring road which skirts past this conurbation and then the junction for Tahiche. The gateway to the north of the island, as well as the location of the former home and studio of the famous local artist César Manrique. Who built an incredible edifice here over the empty bubbles in the lava flow. A sight which is well worth making a stop off for. After Tahiche tourists have a choice of two routes. They can head for the former capital of Teguise, which is home to some superb examples of colonial architecture such as the Palacio Spinola. Or instead follow the coastal road in the direction of Arrieta. Which is the main beach resort in the north of the island and very popular with locals. Arrieta is also an ideal spot for a lunch break as there are some great fish restaurants here. This part of the island is also where tourists will find Lanzarote´s main tourist attractions. Which were all created by the islands favourite son César Manrique. These include the stunning auditorium at the Jameos del Agua, the celebration of cacti at the Cactus Garden and the remarkable look out post at the Mirador del Rio. This part of the island is also much more verdant than the south, especially evident in the Valley of 1000 Palms.
By contrast the south is very arid and offers little in the way of vegetation. But it still has some beautiful scenery in the form of the islands volcanic region. Which was created in the 18th century and which is home to hundreds of now dormant volcanoes and twisted lava fields.
