Lanzarote is one of the seven Canary Islands that are probably best known as a package holiday hot spot. But these islands still attract plenty of more independent travellers too, as a result of the introduction of low cost flights to Lanzarote courtesy of budget operators such as easyjet and Monarch. And now it is it possible to fly from British airports to the island from as little as €100 return.
As a result of this growth in independent travel demand has also increased for private rental accommodation on the island. With a growing number of visitors booking their own Lanzarote villas and apartments via the internet. And despite the lure of chic rural accommodation many British tourists still prefer to opt for accommodation in the two main resorts, with villas in Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen proving perennially popular with this market.

Lanzarote is famous for its volcanoes – and rightly so. During the 1730´s the island was rocked by eruptions that lasted for over six years. So today much of the island’s interior resembles the surface of another planet – characterised by a very dry and arid terrain. So who would have thought that a place with as little rainfall as Lanzarote could be home to its very own wood?
Lanzarote’s wood is called El Bosque and which can be found in the north of the island. Although it is very difficult to track down as it isn’t marked on many local maps and signposts are non existent. So ensuring that this remains a spot largely reserved for the use of the locals who love to come up here at weekends on holidays for BBQ´s and social gatherings. El Bosque is located en route to the breathtaking Valley of 1000 Palms, which is the greenest spot on Lanzarote. Thanks to the age old tradition of planting a new palm tree for every baby born in the nearby village of Haria. Where an atmospheric weekly market is also staged every Saturday morning, featuring stalls selling local cheeses and wines. And from where tourists can enjoy some fabulous walks around the folds and spurs of the valley.
