Along with the ancient city Herculaneum, Pompeii was destroyed as it succumbed to between thirteen to twenty feet of ash and pumice following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79C.E. For over 1700 years it was lost until it’s rediscovery in 1749. Following many excavations the site has provided the world with a detailed depiction of city life during Pax Romana (Roman Peace). It has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts being one of Italy’s most popular attractions.
Visiting Pompeii
When planning a trip to the forgotten city, be sure to map out destinations and make a to do list. There are so many sites to see and it can take days just to see the entirety that is Pompeii. Campania, Italy also offers Pompeii’s sister site, Herculaneum. There is also the National Museum, where there is a collection of some of the best preserved mosaics and other artifacts found at Pompeii. There is also the “Garden of the Fugitives” this is where several plaster casted victims are on display where they originally fell and were overtaken by ash and pumice. The plants within the garden have been reconstructed as well to represent the ancient growth patterns based on studies conducted on the plasters casts of the plant roots. And a walk outside the City Gates to the Villa of the Mysteries will surely add to your trip to Pompeii.
Preservation
Pompeii was very well conserved for over 1,000 years due to the ash and pumice, which formed a seal from the weather. However, now as parts have been excavated and still more is left to be excavated, the ancient city is gradually weakening due to the elements. Tourism is a good way to bring money into the site and permitting more conservation efforts, however preserving and restoring such artifacts is time consuming and expensive.
